SUMMARY:STORY - IMPROV FOR ADULTS SUMMER 2026 SUN 3:15PM
DESCRIPTION:JUMP TO REGISTRATION \n“The improviser has to be like a man walking backwards. He sees where he has been\, but he pays no attention to the future. His story can take him anywhere\, but he must still ‘balance’ it\, and give it shape\, by remembering incidents that have been shelved and reincorporating them.”” – Keith Johnstone \nImprov that focuses on narrative tries to tell a story that has a complete arc from beginning to end\, a story that elicits not only laughter\, but an emotional response. This course will teach you how to create compelling narratives on stage. We will explore various techniques and formats that bring the audience to the edge of their seats in laughter\, fear\, expectation\, and anticipation. \nThis course is for you if you have completed ‘Don’t Panic’ and you want to focus on how to create a narrative structure on stage with your fellow improvisors. \n  \nDOWNLOAD CLASS SCHEDULE

SUMMARY:TIM ORR: THE DEVIL'S IN THE DETAILS - INTENSIVE FOR ADULTS SUMMER 2026
DESCRIPTION:Tim Orr describes improv as “the process of continuously noticing.” \nIn this intensive\, our international guest instructor Tim Orr explores what that means in practice. What can we notice in scenes and stories? There are countless details\, both big and small\, present in every moment: the environment\, objects\, our characters\, and the subtle shifts in other people’s characters. \nWhen we take the time to slow down and truly look around within a scene\, what do we see? How can we use that information to define and propel our scenes with clarity and confidence? And what happens to our work when we allow ourselves to notice more\, rather than rush ahead? \nThis workshop invites experienced improvisers to sharpen their awareness\, deepen their listening\, and uncover the rich world of detail available in every scene. By slowing down and noticing with intention\, you’ll discover new layers of connection\, specificity\, and storytelling in your improv practice. \n*This workshop is suitable for experienced improvisors only\, who have completed an intermediate course with us or their equivalent.  \n  \nClass Schedule: \nTue 14 April 7:00pm-10:00pm\nThu 16 April 7:00pm-10:00pm\nSat 18 April 7:00pm-10:00pm \n  \nAbout Tim Orr \nTim has improvised since 1988 with many San Francisco and international groups\, including BATS Improv\, True Fiction Magazine\, Awkward Dinner Party\, and 3 For All.   In 2009\, he founded the acclaimed troupe Improv Playhouse of San Francisco.  Since 2015\, he has toured Europe with Inbal Lori from Berlin performing their duo show Click. \nTim has also appeared in numerous plays in the San Francisco Bay Area\, and received critical acclaim for his leading roles in the improvised feature films\, Suckerfish and Security. \nNationally\, Tim has performed and taught improvisation at the American Conservatory Theatre\, BATS Improv\, Stanford University\, and many other venues (Los Angeles\, Chicago\, New York\, Austin\, Louisville\, Atlanta\, etc.). \nInternationally\, he has performed and taught at numerous festivals and/or as an invited guest artist in Amsterdam\, Barcelona\, Beijing\, Beirut\, Belgium\, Berlin\, Bucharest\, Dubai\, Hamburg\, Helsinki\,  Lisbon\, London\, Lyon\, Mallorca\, Oslo\, Paris\,  Saudi Arabia\, Shanghai\, Sofia\, Stockholm\, Tel Aviv and more. \nTim has consulted with numerous groups both nationally and internationally in their formation of improvisation groups and also the development of new improvisation formats. \nYoutube

SUMMARY:GUEST SPECIAL: THIS SCENE WAS ABOUT BY TIM ORR - SAT 11 APR 2026
DESCRIPTION:This Scene Was About is an improvised performance that celebrates connection\, emotion and ensemble storytelling. \nOriginally created in Bogotá\, Colombia in 2017 by Italian improviser Favio Maccioni\, the format grew out of an intensive workshop exploring the ideas of emotional mirroring and reading scenes as a gift. As Favio describes it\, it is “a combination of these two beautiful things in improv.” \nTrue to the spirit of improvisation\, the simplicity of the structure becomes its greatest strength. Scenes unfold in ways that are sometimes obvious and sometimes surprising\, inviting audiences into unexpected connections\, emotional depth and moments of shared discovery. \nVisiting artist Tim Orr brings this format to The Courtyard Playhouse\, drawn to its focus on ensemble work\, emotional awareness and the joy of shared storytelling. \n  \nAbout Tim Orr \nTim has improvised since 1988 with many San Francisco and international groups\, including BATS Improv\, True Fiction Magazine\, Awkward Dinner Party\, and 3 For All. \nYoutube

SUMMARY:TIM ORR: PLAYING CHARACTERS WHO ACTUALLY LIKE EACH OTHER - INTENSIVE FOR ADULTS SUMMER 2026
DESCRIPTION:In this intensive\, our international guest instructor Tim Orr explores a simple but often overlooked question: is there really a need for conflict and trouble between characters in every scene? \nWhat happens when we choose to play people who genuinely like each other? When characters get along\, support one another\, and share a point of view\, a whole new world of conflict-free detail opens up. Relationships become clearer\, specifics deepen\, and the scene gains texture without relying on friction to move forward. \nThis workshop invites experienced improvisers to experiment with connection over confrontation\, discovering how alignment can generate just as much momentum\, nuance\, and depth as disagreement. \nA powerful and perspective-shifting approach that can fundamentally change the way you build scenes. \n*This workshop is suitable for experienced improvisors only\, who have completed an intermediate course with us or their equivalent.  \n  \nClass Schedule: \nFri 3 April 7:00pm-10:00pm\nSat 4 April 7:00pm-10:00pm\nSun 5 April 7:00pm-10:00pm \n  \nAbout Tim Orr \nTim has improvised since 1988 with many San Francisco and international groups\, including BATS Improv\, True Fiction Magazine\, Awkward Dinner Party\, and 3 For All. \nYoutube
