When I first walked into Courtyard Playhouse for a trial class, I had no idea what to expect. Immediately after the trial class, I signed up for an improv workshop —part of my journey to rediscover and reinvent myself. Little did I know that stepping onto that stage would not only challenge me but also help me reconnect with a part of myself I had long neglected.
Improv is not just about being funny or quick-witted; it’s about being present, letting go and embracing the unknown. In my first session, I was introduced to the concept of “Yes, and…”—a simple yet powerful exercise where you accept whatever is given to you and build upon it. This was an eye-opener for me. Too often in life, I had hesitated, overthought or doubted myself. But in improv, there’s no room for second-guessing—only room for spontaneity and trust.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was truly listening. I realized that instead of staying in the moment, I was often thinking ahead about what to say next. But improv doesn’t work that way. You have to be fully engaged with your scene partner, responding genuinely rather than planning ahead. This shift in mindset wasn’t easy, but the more I practice, the more I find myself letting go of control and simply being present.
Another interesting discovery was how much my ability to stay in the moment depended on my scene partner. Some interactions felt natural and seamless, while others made me aware of my own hesitations and mental blocks. Each session has became a reflection of my own emotional and mental state, showing me where I needed to grow—not just in improv, but in life.

Beyond the personal growth, Courtyard Playhouse offered a welcoming and inclusive space where everyone felt safe to explore, make mistakes and have fun. The energy of the group, the encouragement from the instructors and the freedom to express myself without fear of judgment has made each session something I looked forward to.
In addition to my workshop sessions, I have attended some Improv Nights and the incredible Maestro Night at Courtyard Playhouse. Watching skilled improvisers take the stage and create magic out of thin air is truly inspiring. The energy, unpredictability and sheer joy of these performances reinforced the beauty of improv—its ability to transform ordinary moments into something extraordinary. Each show is a reminder that storytelling and human connection can be spontaneous, hilarious and deeply moving all at once.
My improv journey has just begun, but I already see its impact beyond the stage. It’s helping me become more confident, more present and more open to life’s uncertainties. Whether or not I ever perform in front of an audience, I know that improv has given me something invaluable—a renewed sense of self and the courage to embrace whatever comes next.
As the Director of Communications at Mortgage Simplified LLC, my professional life often requires clear messaging, adaptability and quick thinking—skills that improv has only strengthened. Learning to embrace spontaneity and actively listen has not only enhanced my ability to communicate effectively in a corporate setting but has also made me more attuned to the needs of my team and clients. The connection between improv and professional life is undeniable and I find myself applying these newfound skills in ways I never imagined.
If you’re looking for a way to break free from self-imposed limitations, improve your confidence or just have an amazing time with a supportive community, I highly recommend stepping into Courtyard Playhouse. Who knows? You might just discover a new side of yourself too!
