Embracing the Unscripted: How Improv Supercharges Leadership

– By Nicholas Ashkar

I’m incredibly grateful to Sal, Kylie, and Haya for their unwavering support in bringing these exciting improv programs to life at Courtyards. Their passion and dedication have created a space where everyone—from new hires to senior leaders—can step outside their comfort zones and discover new muscles of confidence.

Improv has a simple yet profound lesson: say “yes, and” to whatever shows up. On a personal level, this mindset has helped me stay grounded when the unexpected happens—whether it’s an off-the-cuff question in a board meeting or a last-minute pivot in a workshop agenda. By learning to trust my instincts and lean into the unknown, I’ve become more adaptable, both on stage and in the boardroom.

Running engaging workshops isn’t just about the content; it’s about creating a living conversation. Improv exercises have transformed how I design and deliver sessions. They’ve taught me to read the energy of the room, pivot when an exercise isn’t landing, and build on participants’ ideas in real time. The result? Workshops that feel more alive, more collaborative, and more impactful.

What’s been most rewarding is seeing Courtyards’ programs boost our talent’s confidence in front of clients. I’ve watched colleagues sharpen their storytelling techniques, craft compelling narratives on the fly, and handle tough questions with newfound ease. It’s one thing to prepare answers in advance; it’s another to improvise confidently when the script goes off-book. These skills translate directly into stronger pitches, deeper client relationships, and a culture that celebrates bold thinking.

Improv reminds us that the best moments often come from the unplanned. By embracing uncertainty, we unlock creativity, build trust, and strengthen our ability to lead—no matter what the next curveball might be.
